The Agrupamento of Escolas da Guia is situated at the north of Leira, a town on the central coast of Portugal. Our “Agrupamento” covers four small places called: Guia, Carriço, Ilha and Mata Mourisca, which belong to the west side of Pombal – the main central municipality. This is a very rural and peripheral area in which the main activity is agriculture. This is basically why our students and the members of our community have lots of difficulties in getting access to culture and new technologies. Many people still can’t read or write and the per capita income is not very high. Moreover, there are no places to go, like shopping centres or cultural centers, within a radius of 20 kms.

This project would give our students, who live in a very disadvantaged social environment, wonderful experiences to change and enlarge their view of the world and of European citizenship. In addition to this, participating in this project would be a way to use the English language in a real situation. Not only the students but also the whole community would be exposed to the multiculturalism that this activity would offer.
